Excellent work in the detail! Keep it up!

The only downside --- and this would be no reflection on your part, but that of the game designers --- would be the wolf headpiece. Being of the Rotikwaho (Wolf Clan) of the Kanien'keha:ka, we would never wear this: it was considered sacrilege to our totem animal. The Rotiskare:wake (Bear Clan) and A'no:wara (Turtle Clan) also share this view in regards to their own totems.

Other than that, I'm tagging this as a favourite.

Thank you kindly, for the compliment! :thanks::heart:

Ah, these game designers tend to exaggerate every now and then, when it comes to such details.
Since they had a Kanien'keha:ka consultant for this particular game, I wonder why they made such a huge mistake.
They even canceled a lot of features in for the game because, the consultant said they were really inappropriate (like the ability to scalp enemies and a certain mask ceremony).
I guess, the character design was more important to them in the end, than the correctness of the portrayal. :(

I read a few entries about this character on other websites, and the consultants were correct in that we rarely scalped our enemies. Any enemies captured were merely handed over to our women, and they were the ones who would have actually tortured the captives. This was true for males of an enemy tribe; captured women and children were adopted into the clans. The Kanien'keha:ka (and the other nations within the Haudenosaunee or Iroquois Confederacy) follow the mother's lineage, not the father's. In our history only one or two males were actually adopted when they had survived the torture and duly impressed our women and clan mothers; once they gained trust within their adoptive clan, they were eventually allowed to return to their own families and were essentially considered still part of that clan.

In regards to the mask ceremonies, it has always been forbidden to record by illustration or photography any part. Outside the ceremonies, you can draw or photograph these masks, but ask the owner's permission first. The same holds true for the ceremonial regalia worn by our dancers; ask first. We also have several dances in which no photography is permitted, and it is strictly enforced.

Hope this helps. Hug

Yes, thank you very much!
What you told me, really was informative. Not everyting was new to me, but most of it.
I´ve done some research, after playing this game and the game designers also added some written informations, about the Kanien'keha:ka and their culture. But they honestly barely scratched the surface, with their portrayal.
The people and the main characters oringins, were only something to ,,decorate" the story, rather than being an important part, of the plot. :( At least, that´s how I saw it.

I read on your profile, about your oringins. :) Do you actually speak german, as well?

Actually, since my father passed away in 2006, my spoken German has become a little rusty, as the only relation on his side is his sister and her daughter, but they live in the US and I have never met them in person; other than that, all of his side of the family lives in Germany. There are Germans in my area, but I interact with them very little.

Aside from English, the only other language I speak is Kanien'keha. My mother doesn't, but I first learned through her father (who was Rotiskare:wake)  and my relations throughout the Rotikwaho (her mother's clan). I am not a fluent speaker (only 33% of our people can speak the language), but I get by pretty well.

If you ever want to learn more about us, just let me know. There is a lot of information that isn't available on the Internet, and I have found most websites that cater to such research sadly lacking in content, such as our traditional teachings and stories and oral history passed down from generation to generation.

Ah, I see. Well, it´s understandable that your german got a ,,bit rusty", if you never really have the chance of using it.
Kanien'keha is a beautiful language, to me. They also featured it in the game (maybe, you read about that) and I loved listening to the conversations, which were only spoken in Kanien'keha.
The voice actor of the main character, had some troubles with the language every now and then. He wasn´t Kanien'keha but luckily the rest of the voice actors were to my knowledge, so in the end, the quality of the conversations, didn´t really had to suffer.
Seeing how different the written words are from the pronunciation, I can imagine, that it is difficult language to learn.
I´m deeply ashamed to adimt, that each time I read a name from the Kanien'keha (in this game) which wasn´t pronounced, I couldn´t figure out what the actual name was. I think, I was really ,,butchering" the names, in my mind.

I actually do have a question, if you don´t mind:
Is it true, that each persons name is unique for the Kanien'keha?
I´ve some articles about the characters name and it´s meaning. One discribed that no name ever was/is used twice. Is that accurate :?

What you see printed for a Kanien'keha word, is not pronounced the same way, so unless you're familiar with the language, don't worry, we won't hold it against you. :D (Big Grin) (Most of us would just smile, anyway.) To give you a few examples:

She:kon (say-go) = Hello
Skennen'ko:wa ken? (sguh-nuh go wah guh) = How are you? (Do you have great peace?)
Nia:wen (nee-yah wuh) = Thank you

Now for the fun part: the Tyendinaga dialect is somewhat different from that of the other Kanien'keha territories. Our Algonquin enemies at the time called us Mohawks as an insult, which means "man-eater." Of course, the white settlers couldn't pronounce our proper name, so they simply adopted the Algonquin word. Ever since then, we eventually used it as well, which is why when you ask us who we are, most of us will answer "Mohawk."

As for asking questions, please feel free to do so; I don't mind answering them if I can. Yes, each person's name is unique within our clans, and could not be used by another unless permission was given. We never used surnames, and having a bunch of people named Klaus or Sarah would be most confusing if other people did not know which one you were talking about. The name was bestowed by the Clan Mother at birth, but it was not unusual for a person to have two or three name changes as they grew older. It was at this point that the name might be allowed to be used by someone else.

Phew, lucky me. :D
I bet it sounds funny to you, if someome can´t figure out the correct pronunciation, of written words in Kanien'keha. :XD: The writing is indeed, very confusing.
Seeing these examples you showed me, I really have to say that I wasn´t even close to pronounce them properly.
Except for ,,Nia:wen". I heard this word quite often in AC3 and I can remember some other words like ,,No", ,,Sorry" (althought I can´t pronounce that for the life of me ...) or I could tell, if someone is counting  ,1,2,3,4. :giggle:
Of course, remembering these few words it´s not much, but I guess it´s much for me.

You actually answered a question I had, before I even asked.
I´ve read about where the term ,,Mohawk" came from and I knew what it meant.
I thought, that you still see it as an insult from ignorant people, when they call you Mohawk. I didn´t know, that it became quite common for you, to use this term, as well.

I love how each Kanien'keha stays an ,,individual person", by their names and it´s fascinating how each name has a  different meaning.
When a Kanien'keha (as an adult) actually wanted a name change, was he or she allowed, to chose the name on their own (in case it wasn´t used by any other)? Or did the clan mother decided in the end, whether the name could be used. :?
